Ever heard of Green Century Investments?

My 83-year old mother is looking for guidance on investing the proceeds from selling our family home. I just saw an ad for an investment company called Green Century that identifies as socially responsible. Do you know anything about this particular company? many thanks for your work, Nina Galin

Nina, I had a substantial portion of my rather insubstantial stock portfolio in this fund. It is a mutual fund. As you may know this is investing in several enterprises to spread the risk.
The concept of Green is investing in sustainable, fair trade ,worker friendly companies around the world. I was always satisfied with their ethical approach. As for any profit motive they show modest growth overall at best. They haven’t found any future APPLE startups to date.
The ‘Achilles heel’ is the stock market itself and increased uncertainty we see. A ‘green’ coffee plantation is just as vulnerable to climate change and political turmoil often found in those nations as a ‘Big Agra.’
As with any stock investment you do so understanding it can all be lost. At her age and this being a single influx of capital a safer investment is probably best.
