Why do collectives seem to 'disappear' as they mature? Can they remain collective?

Three of our member owned companies started as small collectives, but I doubt the employees there currently think they have a direct say in business activities. These companies are still non-profits - Group Health Cooperative, REI and Puget Consumers Cooperative (PCC). How can they stay employee driven?
