    Stockholders get paid out by the value of their shares. If you sell a stock for a higher price than you paid for it then you are adding value to each and every one of their shares. On the other hand if you sell them short you potentially devalue the shares. The board of directors are generally made up of stockholder and are elected by stockholders.
