Stiglitz, Varoufakis and the EU

Dear prof. Wolff, as you will have heard Josepth Stiglitz recently spoke about the Euro and the EU (https://www.theguardian.com/business/2016/aug/10/joseph-stiglitz-the-problem-with-europe-is-the-euro), and during an interview on Dutch TV he said that it might be necessary to abolish the Euro in order to set up the institutions needed to save the EU. On the other hand, Janis Varoufakis helped created an organisation called DiEM25 in an attempt to democratize and, as a result, save the EU. On multiple instances he claimed that abolishing the Euro will cause humongous crises and problems (like a rising of the extreme-right) throughout Europe together with an explanation that made sense to me, someone with virtually no knowledge about economics. I'm curious to know what your view is on this matter. Thanks in advance! P.S. Love your weekly and monthly talks! You've really made me able to see some of the logical fallacies a lot of economists use!
